 Traffic Volumes Map

The Pima Association of Governments' annual Traffic Volumes Map is a product of PAG's annual traffic counting program. PAG collects average daily traffic (ADT) data on selected, regionally significant roadway segments and at high-volume intersections within the Tucson metropolitan area.

Traffic volumes are used to model congestion problems and help identify projects for inclusion in both the long and short-range transportation plans. Traffic data is collected by a consultant firm, under contract to PAG, and by the staffs of local jurisdictions that maintain a traffic counting program.

Typical traffic data collection methods involve the placement of pneumatic tubes (connected to recording devices) at selected locations along roadway segments and at intersection approaches for a period of at least 48 contiguous hours. Additionally, Pima County and ADOT have some permanent counting locations, where traffic can be continually monitored through the use of electronic loop detectors embedded in roadway pavement.
