 Regional Transportation Authority Implications

On May 16, 2006, Pima County voters approved a $2.1 billion Regional Transportation Authority 20-year, multi-modal plan.

This increases the available level of long-term resources from approximately $9 billion to $11 billion. Even with the additional funding from the RTA, the region still remains short of transportation funds by approximately $3 billion to meet remaining long-term transportation needs.

The RTA was formed in 2004 with the RTA Board first meeting in September. The board formed two committees, the 35-member Citizens Advisory Committee and the 22-member Technical/Management Committee. The committees developed a plan through an extensive public involvement process and recommended a plan to the board on Oct. 24, 2005. The RTA Board approved the plan, which was presented to voters on May 16, 2006, along with the request for the half-cent excise tax to fund the plan.
