The New Freedom Program provides funding for public transportation services and alternatives, beyond those required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), that specifically assist individuals with disabilities. Eligible recipients include non-profit organizations, state or local governmental authority, and operators of public transportation services including private operators of public transportation services.
Eligible activities for New Freedom grants include capital and operating costs of new public transportation services targeted to persons with disabilities and public transportation alternatives that go beyond that required by the ADA. Projects of value to the region would include but are not limited to:
- Support of accessible taxi, ride-sharing and vanpooling programs
- Provision of paratransit services beyond the minimum requirements
- Accessibility improvements to transit and intermodal stations not designated as key stations
- Assistance for maintenance and operating costs for lift-equipped vehicles
- Support volunteer driver and aide programs
- Support mobility, increase accessibility and improve coordination among public transportation providers and other human service agencies that provide assistance to persons with disabilities.
