Electric Vehicles Entering the Greater Tucson Market

Tucson is fast becoming a premier city for electric vehicle (EV) ownership. The Tucson Clean Cities Program has worked diligently with the U.S. Department of Energy and ECOtality North America in planning EV infrastructure in Tucson to insure that EV vehicle owners in the city will have ample charging opportunities. Keep an eye on some of your favorite in-town destinations; you’ll probably see an EV charging there soon.  

Nissan Leaf
In December 2010, Nissan began releasing the fully electric LEAF in select markets in five states to a limited number of pre-order customers. Tucson has been selected to be among the 11 initial launch cities. Beginning in 2011, Nissan will expand availability of the LEAF to nine more states. A full nationwide launch is expected by late 2011 or early 2012.
LEAF Specifications:

The Nissan LEAF is a 100 percent electric vehicle powered by a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery. It has an estimated 100-mile range (100 miles/charge based upon US EPA LA4 City cycle), a top speed of 90 mph, and seats five passengers. The vehicle is available in two trim packages starting at $32,780 ($25,280 after $7,500 federal tax savings).

Ford Focus Electric
The Ford Focus Electric will debut in Tucson and 18 other cities across the country beginning in late 2011. While the new Focus will be powered by an electric motor, it will resemble the conventional Focus in all other respects, including being assembled at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Mich. 
Focus Electric Specifications:

The Focus Electric is a 100 percent electric vehicle powered by a 23 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery. The vehicle has an estimated range of 100 miles and seats five passengers.

EV Infrastructure in Greater Tucson

Electric vehicle charging station infrastructure is becoming a reality in Greater Tucson. Nearly 250 charging stations will be installed in the Tucson metropolitan area through The EV Project.

The EV Project, funded with a $114.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, will install nearly 15,000 charging stations nationwide.

ECOtality North America, which is managing The EV Project, coordinated with PAG Clean Cities to identify locations to place the public charging stations.

Charging Stations
Electric charging stations will be publicly available with one of two charging options: Level 2 and DC Fast Charge

Level 2 stations will constitute the majority of available stations and have the capability to recharge EVs in 4-6 hours using 220 volt power. Level 2 stations are intended for home and business use.
DC Fast Charge stations have the ability to charge compatible EVs up to 80 percent in 30 minutes. DC Fast Charge stations are intended for high density areas or travel corridors.
